In November 2024, the Sahel International Support Foundation – Niger branch marked a new chapter in its mission to create sustainable and self-sufficient food systems in Maradi. This initiative, powered by the Christian Centre for Mission Family and Leadership Development (CEMFLED), builds on months of training, planning, and community engagement.
The project began after the Niger Project Coordinator attended an intensive Regenerative Agriculture Training in Abuja, equipping the team with practical tools to improve yields, restore soil health, and make farming more climate-resilient. To translate this vision into action, Mr. Benjamin (Project Leader) and Chidi (Communications Lead) travelled to Maradi to launch the first phase of implementation.
Day 1 – Preparing the Ground for Growth
We kicked off with land clearing and mapping to optimize planting areas. This was followed by the installation of a drip tape water irrigation system, a critical step to ensure efficient water use and crop survival in the unpredictable Sahelian climate.
Day 2 – Planting the First Seeds
With the land ready, we prepared nursery beds and planted pepper, tomato, and onion seeds — crops chosen for their nutritional value, market potential, and adaptability to local conditions.
Beyond the Farm – Caring for the Community
During the mission, we also visited Gidan Bege (House of Hope), a home for children under our care and support. It was a joy to see them healthy, engaged, and thriving — a reminder that food security is not only about crops but also about nurturing people.
Continuing the Cycle of Life
Today, we are excited to share that another cycle of farming has begun on the land. This new planting phase will build on the lessons from the first cycle, strengthen our regenerative agriculture practices, and ensure year-round production to support both the project and the community.
Looking Ahead
Monitor crop growth closely and apply organic soil improvement techniques.
Train more local farmers and volunteers in regenerative agriculture.
Integrate produce from the farm into local nutrition programs, including for the children at Gidan Bege.
Explore market linkages to turn harvests into income that sustains the project.
From the first seeds planted to the second cycle already underway, Food Secure Mission – Maradi is proving that with vision, teamwork, and God’s grace, the ground can indeed yield abundance — even in challenging environments.
